The 'heel' of the Italian 'boot'. It's probably difficult to imagine how it 'feels' without having gone there but this largely flat region is a prolific source of agricultural produce.

The northern part is gently hilly, the climate surprisingly temperate, even cool in the Murghe plateau. To the south lies the Salento peninsula, the most easterly area of Italy, hot indeed but not exactly torrid, thanks to the interplay of breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian seas.
