Trentino Alto Adige

"Pane e vino fanno un bel bambino"
Bread and wine are fundamental to life

Italy’s most northern region with its high alpine borders with Switzerland and Austria consists of two distinct provinces.

Trentino, the more southerly is traditionally Italian in language and culture and has a fine reputation abroad, especially for sparkling white wines and for indigenous reds.

Alto Adige, so called because of its location around the upper reaches of the River Adige, was, until the First World War, the Austrian South Tyrol, or Sudtiroler. It has clung fiercely to its traditions and although German is the spoken language, this province is officially bi-lingual and enjoys a large degree of autonomy from Rome.

Walled in by the Alps and Dolomites, general wine quality and value have to be high to justify the effort involved in training vines over pergolas on narrow hillside terraces to make the most of what little cultivable land there is.
