Umbria
"The green heart of Italy"
So pretty, just like the background of a Renaissance painting, it’s the only region of Italy without a coastline but it’s unique in other ways too.
They say that 20,000 saints were born here and St Francis of Assisi was just one of them. Full of Etruscan arches and tombs, Roman remains, splendid churches, lots of religious paintings and frescoes. Everywhere, another truly beautiful hill town, Umbria is also infamous for the odd destructive earthquake.
Umbrian cooking, in common with that of much of Italy, is simple and elegant featuring truffles without pomposity and some of the finest flavoured and scented olive oils available anywhere.
The wines have come a long way since the 60’s. That’s how recently Dr. Lungarotti felt compelled to establish a wine museum in Torgiano just south of Perugia to help local people just to make a living.
Orvieto, another achingly beautiful town whether you’re in it looking out, or looking at it across the valley, has lent its name to Umbria’s best known white wine. But Umbria’s most compelling wines, especially reds, have been overshadowed for far too long.
Summers in Umbria are just right, warm but not opressively hot, with frequent showers to keep everything - and everyone - refreshed. If you've ever considered learning Italian in Italy, the Università per Stranieri in Perugia might be a very good place to start...
