Valle D' Aosta

Tucked under Mont Blanc, Valle d’Aosta producers have to make the most of what precious space there is for vines on their stony alpine terraces, some of which are the highest in Europe. Think of this as the high, cleanly fragrant mountainous region that it is, with a deep valley running down the centre. Should you enter Italy via the Mont Blanc tunnel, you’ll journey through this valley and come very close to all the places where wines are made.

Despite its proximity to France and its bi-lingual culture, this region prefers to grow its own unique grape varieties and to make wine according to its own ways, as distinctive as any in Italy.

There is only one official DOC designation - Valle d'Aosta (It) or Vallée d'Aoste (Fr) - encapsulating 24 sub-denominations which identify the grape variety and/or the commune of production
