Montefalco Rosso DOC 2001 - Umbria

Description

Organically cultivated, unfiltered, unfined. Vineyards are situated on Colline di Montefalco at altitude 400 m, with east-south-west exposures on soil in the locality of San Valentino, commune of Montepulciano. Vine support is by cordone speranato at 2,000 plants per hectare, yielding 70 to 75 quintali. The 2001 season was deemed good although a sharp frost in early May resulted in 30% yield reduction. Otherwise, quality was good due to balanced rainfall and sunshine. Vendemmia took place during 1st – 20th October with manual gathering and separation of grapes from stalks before transport to the azienda in small stainless steel containers. Fermentation on the grape skins lasted for 30 days followed by maturation for 24 months in stainless steel. 6,633 bottles of 750 ml resulted from the 2001 vendemmia, each individually numbered.

Displays a vivacious, spicy cinnamon and intense damson nose. Powerful supple body bolstered by fine grained, subtle tannins, black cherries tending to damson and a long spicy finish.

Deep red, full bodied, Sangiovese 70% Montepulciano 15% Sagrantino 15%, ABV 13.2%, serve 18 to 20oC
