Gutturnio is the classic red wine of the hills south of Piacenza. This Riserva 2003 is made from the fruit of old vines fermented in small caratelli for 24 months then bottled following malolactic. Coming into its own late 2007 having taken some time for the initial wood elements to integrate perfectly. Compare and contrast with the 2001, a little of which is still available, or the 2004 which will become available for delivery in February 2008.
Complex nose led by red berries, definite but measured vanilla with herbs and spices. Unusually intense on the palate, smooth, good acidity with an abundance of initial fruit dissolving through a hint of tar to an almost damson-like richness and a long, dry, mildly spicy finish.
Rich ruby red, full bodied matured, Barbera 60% Croatina 40%, ABV 14%, serve 18oC
