Lazio Italy
"Home territory to the ancient Roman art of winemaking"
The Eternal City, capital of the Papal States and heart of the Roman Empire is unmissable.
The vast majority of Lazio’s population lives in Rome with the rest scattered across the region in and around small provincial centres, many of which are surprisingly attractive.
It was the Romans who really pushed the technological frontiers of winemaking. Drinking mainly reds, wine was always central to Roman occasions; they obviously and quite rightly revelled in it!
Lazio’s climate, subject to the sirocco that zips across the Tyrrhenian Sea from North Africa can be scorching at times but the hills provide a cooler sanctuary for vines, visitors and modern weekend Romans alike.
Although most of Lazio’s wines are white, Frascati being by far the best known abroad and widely produced, some of the most compelling wines are in fact red.
