Le Marche Italy
Le Marche has a peaceful history by comparison with neighbouring regions although it was Etruscan then Roman territory. This part of the Adriatic coast with lots of steep slopes and torrents rushing to the sea is relatively sparsely populated and remains beautiful. Land and sea still touch the people, even if they work in town, frequently still living on what they produce. Balanced lifestyle or what?
It's a great place for truffles, too, some of the best even competing with those of Alba in Piemonte. Then there are the giant olives, big enough to stuff with meat and cheese, individually breadcrumb and deep fry. As with so many of Italy's delights, it's astounding that you never see these 'olive ascolane' here.
Most white wines of Le Marche are made from Verdicchio.
Red wines from the relatively extensive area around Ascoli Piceno - designated Rosso Piceno - are made from two archetypal central Italian grape varieties, Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Those two grapes have a natural affinity for one another with the bias toward Sangiovese in Rosso Piceno. In the smaller designation - Rosso Conero just south of Ancona - Montepulciano is the dominant partner. Try some of each, compare and contrast...
